BradBlogging’s 6 (Belated) New Years Goals – 2009

Although this post is 2 days late, it never hurts to set out a couple of goals for the New Year. Doing this can focus your efforts and can make you avoid the constant “What should I be doing” factor that many bloggers will experience throughout their career. (Sidenote: Yes, I just called blogging a “Career” because I feel that a blog can be heavily compared to a small/large business, they definitely have the potential to make as much money )

Brad’s New Year Goals for 2009:

Obtain 1000+ RSS Subscribers – I’m currently at 242 (today) and think this is a practical goal for an entire year.. It can be done!
Obtain 200+ Twitter Followers – Again, I’m currently at 20, so I should probably network the fact that I have a twitter feed, and encourage people to follow it.
Modify my blog design – The blog design on BradBlogging.com is great right now, but there are some issues I have with some of the elements. I’d like to make a 3 columned footer, perhaps change the header background, and other misc. details.
Obtain some sponsorships – The Nov/Dec 2008 months were pretty bare for advertisers.. I had none! It would be nice if I could find a couple of good sponsors to purchase some advertising.
Help more people with their blog problems – Right now, about 3 people have emailed me with problems about their blog, and I’ve helped all 3 of them fix their issues.. If you have a problem, send me an email!
Put some time into other internet projects – I find that diversifying your time can make you a more creative person when it comes to blogging. If you spend all your time talking about the niche your blog is about.. There’s not much that is going to change or develop over time. However, if you work on other projects such as another blog, forum, website, etc, you can oftentimes bring different ideas and views to your content.

Did anyone else lose all of their email subscribers?

Just a quick update that perplexed me when I saw the stats.

I lost all of my email subscribers in one day, making my feedcount from around 190 go down to around 100. Has anyone else had this weird little glitch?

If this has happened to you, fear not! I have felt the effect of this weird glitch as well. We can only hope that feedburner fixes the problem as quickly as it appeared.

Halloween Contest Ending Tonight

If Your AT ALL Serious About Blogging, Leave Your Blogger Domain

To emphasize my point about leaving your .blogspot domain, I’ll start off with a riddle:

A person is trapped in a room. The room has only two possible exits: two doors. Through the first door there is a room constructed from magnifying glass. The blazing hot sun instantly fries anything or anyone that enters. Through the second door there is a fire-breathing dragon. How does the man escape?

The answer is at the bottom of the post in-case you want to figure it out! However when you are on a .blogspot account for your blog, YOU ARE TRAPPED. The only thing you can do on the blog is write and make money off sponsored posts, however, I bet that you didn’t know that you cannot sell or transfer ownership to anyone else.

When you sign up for a blog, you check the “I agree to the Terms & Conditions”. Seeming as nobody bothers to read them, I’ll pick out the part that says you cannot sell your blog to other interested parties:

7. No Resale of the Service. Unless expressly authorized in writing by Google, you agree not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade, resell or exploit for any commercial purposes (a) any portion of the Service, (b) use of the Service, or (c) access to the Service.

What does this all mean? All the work that you do to build the blog with links, content and readership will either have to be transfered to another blog or not moved during the blog’s life on the internet.

So If you’re at all serious about starting a blog and want TOTAL control over how you want to run it (Perhaps selling it later in the road) – fess up $100 bucks for a domain name and 2 year hosting and see how far that gets you. If you write some good content, you’ll easily recoup those costs in advertising sales and sponsored posts.

The title says it all. Since the release of WWSGD (What Would Seth Godin Do) Plugin, thats what every blog says. Even if the blogs do not use that plugin, it is still usually on the front page, or after every post. My question is: “How effective is asking your visitors to subscribe to your feed, if they like the content?”

If they arrived via Stumbleupon, chances are they will read your article and “Stumble” something right after, completely ignoring your request to subscribe.

If they arrived via Digg, the visitor will read the article, perhaps subscribe for a couple days, then disappear. The main reason why they subscribed however was to see more articles like the ones they saw on the website… More times than not, the content will just thin out. The person will unsubscribe, figuring out that the story that made it on the front page of Digg was a “One Hit Wonder”.

These cruel blogging facts may astonish you, I’m just the first person to actually write a post about it. So what’s the solution?? Modify the message to reflect something on your blog to make it stand out from the average,

“Your New Here, Perhaps you should subscribe to my RSS feed”
