Blog Architecture - How “Sturdy” Is Yours?

Colosseum In Rome

My Personal Photograph Of The Colosseum In Rome

While trying to decide a topic to talk about after I came back from my vacation in Europe, I thought I should include a picture or two that I have taken along with it. So I decided to use some pictures from the Colosseum to construct an idea that has been stirring about in my head for the past 20 minutes. What are you going to be blogging about in 1 month? Is your niche sturdy enough to last those crucial starting months?? Literally, only time will tell.

A lot can be learned from the past… such as that the Colosseum took 10 years to build and used precision mathematics to create archways to support such a large weight. Which could be related about how you are building your blog with content and readers in a sense. Are you going to be changing your topic once you run out of ideas?

Although creating a blog only takes a couple of minutes, you could be short sighting yourself out of some great long term readers that would only enjoy your articles if you were talking about that certain one. In Basic Terms: If you can only think of 30 ideas to post about for your specific topic, perhaps you may want to broaden it and then have more.

Social Bookmarks Icons - The Overuse and Abuse

When I visit blogs, I usually leave unless something interests me above the fold (The area where I can see by loading your site, without having to scroll down to see more). If I like an article you have written, expect a comment or subscription, but please..Do not infest your “After-The-Post” area with 10 different icons for different social networks. An example of this is the picture below:

Social Bookmarks Icons - The Overuse and Abuse

The amount of readers that actually take the time to add the specific post to their “Favourites” on 10 different (or even 1) bookmark manager would be feeble. Even if they do, wouldn’t that be taking away from R.S.S Subscriptions because of the time taken to add it to their favourites? I used to use 6 icons, and then realized that Stumbleupon was the only icon worth having on my blog because all of the other ones don’t deliver.

Something that people should REALLY be careful about is having 30 icons at the end of their posts, overwhelming the reader with choices and distractions, then perhaps losing a comment. A valuable piece of your readers knowledge lost because they feel its not worth their time to go past all of the “End-Of-Post” content that is on every one of the bloggers post.

So what about you? Do you really take the time to add the post to any other bookmark/social media sites except Stumbleupon, or do you just read it and continue to surf other blogs. Personally, I rarely add posts that I have read to Stumbleupon unless they really would make a difference to my friends and is something that they would find interesting.

My advice would be to have your top preforming network or 2 after your post, and then a comment link. By doing this, You focus the readers attention on one of the two icons and have more of a chance to have a reader do something with them, instead of just lollygag and skip the process. Keep it simple and watch your blog interactivity explode!

How To Create Your Own Blogger Template Theme *Updated*

BloggerThis tutorial will cover the steps needed to create your own blogger template. Many people have used blogger to run blogs and have wondered how they can make their own theme to use with it. There are a very few hard to find guides on how to do this, so I’ve decided to take up the task to help as many people as I can, create one.

To create a blogger template, you will need a graphic editor (Such as Photoshop, GIMP, or even Paint will do) to create images for backgrounds, post headers, sidebars, etc.. We will get to that later. You will also need an idea or vision about what you want to create. Without that, you are just wasting your time and electricity. Lastly, you will need to know about C.S.S (Cascading.Style.Sheets) and how to operate them. If you do not know how to do that, you cannot apply interesting effects to your newly designed template (Such as: Positioning pictures or text, creating repeated backgrounds, moving around pictures and text and more). A great guide on how to get started with this is available here.

Once you have got everything you need, you should start the C.S.S Framework by putting properties such as

Blogs that are easier on the eyes will most likely be better to read

Blogging can be a great way to pass time, learn new things, entertain yourself or all of the above. Chances are… blogs that are easier on the eyes will most likely be better to read than ones full of ads or use annoying colours. So in order to achieve that “Well-Developed” or “Custom” look, many people will get a free template that appeals to their interest. Although, the only thing that now separates you and 1000’s of other template users is your content.

Every browser gives its users the ability to bookmark sites that they enjoy to save it for later time. So it would make sense if somebody liked your blog that they would bookmark it and visit another time. The real question is How could you separate your bookmark without using titles so that people could easily find it? The answer is a little thing called icons and can be easily integrated into your website with a few simple steps.

To create an icon you need a picture that you will want to use to go beside your bookmark. That I cannot do for you and you will have to do yourself trying to find something that reflects what your blog is about.  Once you have that done, [Continues After The Jump...]
