Resurrecting Your Old Posts From The Archives
Its a lot of work writing articles for a blog - anyone that has one will know what I am talking about. It’s great to have some articles reach the top of google and get lots of traffic from it, but others simply vanish behind the “Next Page” button at the bottom of your first page.
So what this post is doing is question whether bringing back old articles from your early blog stages (1 mos.-2 mos.) would be a good idea.. So that your new subscribers can get some articles that you have written, without having to go looking for them.
You would simply just copy and paste, perhaps deleting the old post to avoid duplicate content. The content would be delivered to all RSS Subscribers and Email Subscribers… Most will think it is a new article, the others that have read your blog for a while will know it’s a duplicate.
What your thoughts on bringing content, “Back from the Dead?”

Resurrecting old posts is a great idea. But if you delete the old post and create a new one, make sure to use a redirection plugin to point to the new post. Otherwise, you would lose in SEO benefits the old post has. Other options could be to have a featured post section on your home page. That won’t send the old article to your feed, but will give it more attention.

I would think that resurrecting older post may be a good idea. If and only if….
You had a good number of comments on the post you wanted to bring forward.
If you could reword it or improve on it somehow.
I don’t know if copying it exactly is a good idea. Although I have been wrong before. After all I am just a woman

I am planning to do digest posts themed to different topics (probably when I go over first hundred of posts). It allows to highlight few old posts at the same time without actually reusing past content.

@ TWA - Both of your ideas are a great way to showcase content that might have otherwise been “Forgotten”. The only problem with the “Featured Article” is that it makes your returning visitor have to scroll past that.. (Even if it is just an exerpt) which could of been used for your new articles.. Nevertheless, thanks for your knowledge!
@ Melvin - Exactly what I was thinking when I wrote this post
@ Wendy - You would just create a new article with the same content on it, perhaps redirecting the old post to the new one. You make it sound like “being a woman” is somewhat less than being a man..
@ Rarst - Thats a good idea too.. I think theres a plugin called, “Top Post By Category” that allows a user to click on the tags and see the top posts under that category.

Gizmodo writers seem amazing that this. I wish I had a big enough pool of content to do this with. It’s especially hard to do this when writing news when you can’t update too often.

i think it is a great way to bring attention back to old posts. Especially if they were good ones that just didn’t get enough hits. I tend to link back to old posts every so often, usually because new readers may never find some of the older stuff.

Interesting question. I make a point of linking to past posts that are relevant, occasionally repeating parts of them. I had not factored in the RSS issue. Maybe it is worth resurrecting a post, but with an update (There is always an update).

Your right it is alot of work, Good idea. However I’m curious as to the repercussions of that. What would you say a good time frame is, as to how soon you can repost something?

Rather than simply deleting & reposting an older blog entry, I prefer to create a new post to “deep link” back to the older post(s). This gives you the opportunity to revisit a topic quickly and without a lot of effort, yet it isn’t simply a duplicate of earlier content. And while it also gives the search engines another path to dig into, the more important advantage is that doing so can prompts your readers to explore your older posts even more. “Deep Linking” is an excellent way to shine a little new light on an older post that never quite seemed to get its due share of exposure. Y’know sometimes the blog entries that you’re most proud of are the ones that can seem to go by unnoticed…And I’d also argue that it can sometimes be legit to edit an older post to provide an additional link forward from it to a newer, related entry. I’m not talking about doing a George Lucas-style overhaul, just a minor tweak. I haven’t done this often, but on most of the posts where I’ve done this, I’ve indicated it with a little red “Update” notation, so it’s more apparent. (You can take a look at my FiveFingers For Your Ten Toes article for an example. Oooh, see that? I just “deep linked!”)
